Ancient Capital of Zheng and Han States National Archaeological Site Park
Introduction
The Ancient Capital of Zheng and Han States National Archaeological Site Park, located in Xinzheng city, Henan province, preserves the historic remains of the Zheng and Han States' capitals. Positioned at the confluence of the Shuangji and Huangshui Rivers, it was a cultural and economic center dating back to the late Western Zhou period, around 2,700 years ago.
The ruins of the Zheng-Han Ancient City cover a circumference of roughly 20 kilometers, encompassing an area of 16 square kilometers. The city walls, which are among the best-preserved from this era, reach a height of 16 meters and have a base width ranging from 40 to 60 meters. These fortifications highlight the architectural capabilities and the defensive priorities of the era.
Within the city limits, numerous historical structures have been identified. These include palaces, ancestral temples, and sacrificial sites. Additionally, the tombs of the Zheng aristocracy, constructed using rammed earth techniques, have been discovered. The site also contains evidence of various workshops and production areas, suggesting the presence of thriving manual industries. Artifacts such as copper, iron, jade, and bone items, along with remnants like copper slag, charcoal, and pottery, have been unearthed, providing insight into the technological and artistic practices of the time.
Historical Significance
The site first became notable when the Zheng State established its capital there during the late Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771 BC). It continued to hold political importance until the Han State overtook the Zheng State and relocated its capital to the same location. Over the course of 539 years, the area remained a central hub for political and economic activities. The dual use of the site by two successive states underscores its strategic importance in the region's ancient history.
